Don’t go to church. Dive in!

Don’t go to church. Dive in!

You can feel the difference!

Last night I was invited to be a part of a Good Friday worship event by a group of English speaking African Christians. First Methodist Houston hosts a ‘Swahili Worship Night’ and about 300-400 people are there.

The vibe is awesome and I put some really bad video here to give a taste. Dancing, music, cheering, hugging, high-fives – it is great! We had so much fun. It was 9:30 p.m. when we left, the party was still going strong. Deborah – my wife – said, ‘I don’t know what the entrance to heaven is like, but I hope it is exactly like that!’.

Attending church? Going to church. There is a better way to think about it. Dive in!

Church is not something we ‘attend‘. Church is a community we are. To think of it as something we enter and exit, are a part of and leave, is not what Jesus had in mind. Following Jesus is a way of life and we never stop – that’s what disciples do. The party rolls on and on and on!

So here is a challenge for you tomorrow.

Don’t go to church, dive in. Figure out how the community works. Worship, small groups, Sunday School classes, mission opportunities and get in! If the church does not do these things – maybe be a little suspicious – but most do. Dive in and see what life is like when you’re a full part of a church you can call home.

Maybe even try this – every time your church asks you to be a part of something say ‘yes’! Six months later if your life is not better, call me – 281-814-1198. The secret I am in on is that it will be. Jesus, friends, a way of life of loving God and neighbor, that is what Jesus had in mind.

Finally, If you do not have a place check out tomorrow come to First Methodist Houston – www.fmhouston.com/easter. I will be honest. We are like Houston. Our church looks, sounds, acts, smells, breathes all that Houston is.

We would love to have you. A word of warning, though. We are not interested in walk-ins. We are going to try to convince you that church is something that you should never leave, and we think Jesus wouldn’t have it any other way!
